Swedish industry group develops lightweight solutions for the space and aerospace sectors
NITIU, in collaboration with Alleima, Saab, and Volvo Group, has been entrusted by the Swedish National Space Agency to take the first steps toward the next generation of lightweight solutions for space and aerospace applications. With the industry group’s innovative technology and strong partnership, the project aims to validate joining techniques for ultra-thin materials, with the potential to reduce the weight of lightweight structures by up to 50%.
Meeting the future demand for sustainable and efficient fuel solutions in space
As the demand for satellites and other orbiting spacecraft continues to grow, so does the need for lightweight and efficient solutions for future fuels. The technology under development has significant potential applications, such as cryogenic hydrogen tanks and low-orbit refueling depots (LORD), which are space-based refueling stations that enable efficient fuel transfer.
“This technology was originally developed within NFFP, the Swedish aeronautical research and innovation program. By adapting it to the extreme weight-reduction requirements of space, this solution could pave the way for lighter and stronger structures, both in space and for other applications,” says Prof. Johan Steelant, ESA.
The project goal is to test and validate a joining technique, developed by the industry group, for ultra-thin materials. The technology is expected to improve performance in applications where low weight and compact volume are critical.
“We’re proud to be part of this project, where advanced technology and collaboration come together to develop solutions that have the potential to revolutionize the future of space and aerospace applications,” says Patrik Eriksson, CEO of NITIU.
